Kimia was the first Italian company to introduce composite systems for structural consolidation onto the market. One of the very first interventions carried out was on the vaults of the Santuario del Sacro Tugurio in Rivotorto di Assisi. It was 1984 and for the occasion, mats made of metro fiber combined with epoxy resins were used, in addition to a series of repair interventions on damaged walls. The Santuario, 13 years after the intervention, resisted the violent Umbria-Marche earthquake of 1997 that seriously hit the city of Assisi. The Santuario di Rivotorto therefore represents the first historical building in the world to resist a disastrous earthquake thanks to the use of composites. An important testimony, strengthened today, forty years after the consolidation intervention, by the results of the investigations carried out by Kimia in collaboration with the University of Perugia.
