The Trevi Fountain

The pictures of the water which flowed again in the basins from 3rd November spread all over the world, hundreds of people who were there on this occasion clapped loudly. The Trevi Fountain in its ancient splendour thanks to the restoration measures, over 2 million euros, financed by the Italian fashion brand Fendi. This was made under the scientific supervision of “Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali”.

Restoration measures have been carried out by ATI Trevintre (Cooperativa CBC. A.R.A. snc, TECNICON srl), the ancient and prestigious stone materials have been cleaned, restored and strengthened. The restoration has been a great occasion to see the modern led light of the monument and modernise the water system below.

The Trevi Fountain accessible during the restoration works

516 days and the precious work of 26 restorers to give us such an invaluable heritage. The Trevi Fountain has never been hidden during these works.
As the Maison Fendi said, when they announced the reopening of the Fountain: “During the restoration period, the Sovraintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali had the brilliant idea to build a transparent footbridge, directly accesible from the square, which allowed visitors to see the Trevi Fountain from a unique perspective, to physically go into an internationally known work of art, unbelievably close to it”.

The idea of creating a footbridge was amazing, in fact over 3 million visitors walked on it. “The restoration project, based on creativity, set up one of the most innovative restoration site for this kind of measures and it also allowed people to keep on visiting one of the most famous and prestigious monument in Rome”, according to Fendi declaration.

The commitment of Kimia in the restoration of the Trevi Fountain

The restoration work was a majestic and ambitious project, not only Italy was proud of it. In Kimia we were honoured to be the suppliers of materials, collaborating with the contracting company ATI Trevintre. In particular we dealt with the waterproofing of the basins, in october, after the scaffolding on the sides was removed.

The solution chosen for the waterproofing, in collaboration with Sovrintendenza Capitolina and the restoring company, was the osmotic waterproofing mortar Betonfix 300. In this occasion our laboratories have created different versions of Betonfix 300 in several colours, chosen by the restorers and the Site Management. Thanks to its special features, Betonfix 300 is able to seal perfectly the porosity and the cracks of the foundation, preserving the precious marble of the basins.

The mortar was reinforced with glass fibre mesh with antalkaline sizing Kimitech 350 and mixed with single component flexibilizer resin, Kimitech Kimitech ELASTOFIX, used to obtain flexible and adhesive cement mixtures.
